The same side of the boards is screwed onto the sleepers (4). The opposite side (3), on the other hand, is firmly fitted against the sleepers by the fasteners. During swelling and shrinking of the boards, the wood will naturally choose the easiest way to move, i.e., in the direction opposite the screwed side (see illustration above). Therefore the regular and constant spacing between boards can be guaranteed over time, as well as the alignment of the boards installed end-to-end.

The majority of boards shaped to receive an invisible fastener are not reversible as their profile is asymmetrical and sometimes unidirectional. Only one side of the boards can be used. If the top side is damaged, it cannot be used and is lost.

Contrary to other hidden fastening systems, the HardWood Clip grooved surface, ® on the other hand, is perfectly symmetrical and reversible.

Both sides of the boards can be used, interchangeably.

Use of the HardWood Clip fastening system® Protect the wood fibres against aggression and stress it undergoes with traditional installations and raised screws, when the boards swell and shrink widthwise, between dry and wet seasons.
In fact, with traditional raised screws, the boards are secured with two screws, widthwise, which cross it to fix it firmly in place on the sleeper and prevents any movement.
But when the wood swells and shrinks, it will exert considerable force and pressure on the screws that cross it. Its fibres will get damaged and weakened and will lead to splitting and warping. In some cases as well, the screws may break under this major stress.

10 essential criteria that guarantee the quality of a fastener.

HardWood Clip® is the only hidden fastening system that satisfies 10 minimum essential requirements that a fastening system (visible or hidden) for decking must meet:

  • 1. Assessment by an independent organisation: The fastener must have been subjected to an overall assessment by an independent and certified expert organisation resulting in the creation of very precise technical specifications and installation.
  • 2. Stainless steel: the fasteners and their metal components must be made of stainless steel.
  • 3. Transfer of uprooting stress: the fasteners must secure the boards to the sleepers sufficiently to be able to take over major uprooting stress.
  • 4. Transfer of shearing stress: the fastener must be able to take over the shearing stress.
  • 5. Absorbing swelling and shrinking: the fastener must be able to absorb the swelling and shrinking of wood between dry and wet periods.
  • 6. Self-clamping boards: the fastener must have a self-clamping effect between deck boards and sleepers.

Why pre-drilling preserves the screw and results in time saving with hard woods

Our SPAX screws® are self-tapping and manufactured with the best quality stainless steel in order to guarantee their mechanical performance and to allow their fitting without pre-drilling.

They have been tested over long periods and successfully in order to guarantee their efficiency and resistance. Successive screwing-unscrewing without pre-drilling, screwing at 90° and 45° through boards in the hardest of woods, salt spray tests, etc.

Despite this, for an efficient and quality job, we highly recommend pre-drilling during installation (see our instructions).

Reduces the risk of screws breaking:

During screwing, the screw undergoes torsion around its axis that generates shear stress and weakens the material. Pre-drilling considerably reduces this stress and preserves the screw’s resistance potential.

On the other hand, the high density of hard wood species leads to significant heating of the screw that reduces its mechanical resistance proportionally to its rising temperature. Pre-drilling reduces heating of the screw and preserves its mechanical resistance, even in the event of poor adjustment of the screwdriver speed. To be noted that the heating of the screw is also highly reduced thanks to better removal of the wood chips generated when the hole is being drilled during pre-drilling. Pre-drilling also reduces the stress the screwing bit places on the screw head.

Ease of subsequent unscrewing:

For the reasons listed above, subsequent unscrewing of the screws is made easier thanks to the conservation of the resistance of the screw material.

Reduces the risk of the wood splitting or cracking:

Pre-drilling reduces the risk of the wood splitting or cracking, especially when the ends of the boards are screwed where it has been made obligatory by DTU 51.4, regardless of the wood species used.


Time saving with hard woods:

Pré-drilling is not a waste of time and productivitý as some believe, quite the contrary, especially with hard woods.

The speed of drilling the hole (with a suitable bit) and the screw penetration time are very rapid for screwing after pre-drilling, even in very hard wood species. What is more, no priming time is necessary for the screw. For a fast and efficient job, we recommend the use of two drill drivers, one with the drill bit and the other with the screw bit.

In the event of screwing without pre-drilling, even though drilling and screwing take place in one step, priming time is long and the screw’s penetration speed into the wood is slow.

It is therefore important to compare the installation time for both methods on the basis of efficiency, qualitý and overall risk (breakage, unscrewing).

PROFILES

TWIN

Symmetrical and reversible.

The TWIN profile is perfectly symmetrical and reversible. Both sides of the boards can be used.

Depending on the finish on the boards, the TWIN profile allows to reduce board stock (1 smooth side/1 grooved side or 2 sides grooved differently) or to reduce losses by choosing the best side during installation (2 smooth sides or 2 identical grooved sides). The TWIN profile can be easily created during moulding or in the workshop, using a moulding machine, by using a simple blade (without internal rounded corners, in this case), moulding knives or milling cutter. It can also be created on site, during installation, using a Lamello® or similar. When used as weatherboarding, the boards could be more or less cut out depending on the choice of fastening model, conditions and compliance with regulations permitting. 3-5-img02

DROP

Profile with cover for weatherboarding and decking.

The DROP profile allows to visually reduce the spaces between boards whilst guaranteeing adequate spacing provided by HardWood Clip ® or SoftWood Clip fastenersand necessary to the movement of the wood. When used as weatherboarding, the boards could be more or less cut out depending on the choice of fastening model, conditions and compliance with regulations permitting.

Screwing of weatherboarding into rafters.

The boards are screwed directly into the rafters at a 45° angle through the fastener.

  • The screwing of the boards into the rafters guarantees perfect stability of the boards during installation, notably for vertical weatherboarding.
